MOBO Wining UK Sax Player,
Is New Rising Star of Urban Jazz

"Take a jug of Jazz, two teaspoons of Soul and a twist of R&B, then add a cup full of Gospel, a sprinkle of Reggae and a pinch of Latin, served with Raw Emotion…………There you have that Yolanda Brown Sound"

Like a breath of fresh air in an industry that plays by the rules, Saxophonist Yolanda Brown has broken the mould to create a sound that truly is unique and has arguably become the face of modern Urban Jazz.

"I've always been interested in music and musical instruments………as a child a child I played the drums, violin and piano, by the time I was 14, I discovered the Saxophone and fell in love with it. For two years I was taught the basic elements of the instrument, and after that I taught myself.
When I left school I knew I wanted to peruse a career in music. Whilst at Uni I saw that Black Grape were holding auditions looking for members for a new band, I went along with my Saxophone. I performed and they were really impressed asking me if I wanted to perform as a solo artist. I immediately jumped at the chance. In three years I went from being a student to performing at my first solo show.
The public initially were unsure of my style of music, but thankfully they came with an open mind and the response has been amazing. People really understand my music as its very conversational as opposed to conventional Jazz. My style is very different, I try and mix it up by incorporating current songs as well as original tracks to my set.

To date I have covered tracks including Bob Marley's 'Wait in Vain', Robin Thicke's 'Lost Without You', and Neyo's 'Miss Independent'. I've found its helped open up this style of music to a brand new younger audience.

Wining the 2008 MOBO best Jazz Act, was such an amazing feeling, and it's an honour just to be nominated and recognised for the work that we at (Black Grape) have done. I'm an unsigned artist, therefore all of this is down to hard work from the team. The love and support that I have received from the public has been fantastic, and I would like to say thank you to everyone who took the time out to vote for me and support me at my live shows. Its been an amazing journey and we are just at the beginning………………..
