DJ Profile: STEVE QUIRK

SPECIALITY: Smooth Jazz & Real Soul

Regarded Internationally as The UK's Authority on Contemporary Jazz

"My love and passion for music has filled my life for the last forty years, ever since my parents bought me my first album "The Carpenters 69-73" (I wanted to marry Karen Carpenter...but who didn't?). My obsession for music continued through the 70's with the discovery of jazz and soul along with artists like Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson, Average White Band, Grover Washington Jr, Jeff Lorber Fusion and Bob James. I had a passion for music from the West Coast too...Ambrosia, Michael McDonald, Bill LaBounty, Michael Ruff, and Boz Scaggs etc.
Music has always been about "groove and melody"...yes improvisation within a track but as long as you come back to that "groove and melody".

It was one man who influenced me back in the day... he just happens to be my now old friend, Russ Davis (who now works for XM radio satellite). He was working for WQXI in Atlanta hosting "Jazz Flavours", mixing in Al Jarreau with George Winston, Kenny G with Sade, Bob James with George Benson...

My radio show "Fusion Flavours" first aired on Easter weekend April 1990 on Sunset Radio in Manchester England. I played Bob James - "Westchester lady", Dave Grusin - "Mountain dance", George Benson - "Breezin", Grover Washington Jr - "Just the two of us", Kenny G - "Songbird" etc..After all these years, those tracks still sound good today. "Fusion Flavours" has evolved as we enter its 15th year, bringing together the very best in classic and current smooth jazz, smooth soul blended with new releases and interviews with today's artists. My love for "Fusion Flavours" and for music is even stronger today. The object of the show is to let as many people as possible hear this great music whether in a small or large market...after all these years for me it's still about PASSION and I suppose it always will."
